Making Money From Site Flipping

mums make money site flippingThe internet provides a vast array of new possibilities for those who grab hold of the opportunities that this new technology provides. Site flipping is one opportunity that work from home mums and entrepreneurs have been taking advantage of to secure steady income while developing a home based business.

For the purposes of site flipping, a website is essentially internet ‘real estate’. Just like a home renovation, the updating and improvement of a site can increase the value of something that you have.

About Site Flipping

If you’ve not had a lot to do with the internet beyond surfing your favourites sites, then you may not have heard the term ‘site flipping’ before. Just like day trading of stocks, or flipping of real estate, site flipping is about taking a website that is not fulfilling it’s full potential and turning it into a more profitable, attractive opportunity.

Flipping can be a short term proposition, or you may keep the site for longer and make more in depth improvements before selling it on to someone looking for a site that is bringing in a steady stream of income.

Getting Started

To get started, you should find out more about web page rankings and traffic, so that you can analyse a site fully before outlaying any money. Sites are often sold at auctions sites such as flippa.com. As a rule of thumb, you should expect to pay around 10 times the monthly income. Here are some examples of the indicators you should be looking for to determine if a site is valuable:

1. Does it have a list (customer base)?
2. Existing profit = instant cashflow
3. Property (network and domain) – you might own a niche (i.e. have a lot of sites related to the same niche)
4. Traffic (size and source): the more targeted and relevant traffic you’ve got the higher the value of your business.
5. History: has it been getting traffic and profit, how old is the domain?

Once you have a clear picture of the site’s potential, you can then develop a solid plan to follow to make improvements and then on-sell or ‘flip’ the site to realise a profit.

Making a Profit

There are a number of ways to improve the profits a site is generating and turning site flipping into a work from home opportunity. Depending upon the age of the site, the amount of traffic it currently receives and whether or not it has already been monetized with sponsorship or with the use of advertising, these areas are a good place to start.

A relatively new site with great content and a good following can be improved if you are willing to wait things out a while until the site is a little older, at which point in time it may become worth more money. If a site with a solid following, but which could be significantly improved with just a little traffic generation effort is another option.
Finally, you may find that the site already has everything necessary in place, but has never been monetized and is therefore open to improvement and an increase in value by taking that step.

If you’re eager to make an online income, mums have found that site flipping is a great opportunity. For those who have not fully explored the possibilities for making money online, this is one area that embraces the ideas of making money wholly within the online environment.

Safety Check

Before making any buying decisions, it is vital that you do your due diligence. You must confirm what you have been told by the seller. Therefore, research the market, the site and the seller. Watch out for ‘red flags’ such as very ‘salesy’ copy. Remember, if it sounds too good to be true, there is a strong chance it is! Saying that, there are definitely some amazing deals to be found – as long as you know what you are looking for!

I’m an up and coming mumpreneur and site flipping sounds very interesting. I come from a real estate background and I know how much money can be made by renovating and old house and selling it. This is the same thing but with a website. Amazing!! I will definitely be keeping an eye out for further info. Thanks for posting this Fiona.

  4. Hi Zoe – if you already have experience in buying and selling real estate, then you probably already have many skills that would help you.

  5. Liz

It’s quite amazing what is available out there if you want to be a mumpreneur. I have never heard of “site flipping”. I will certainly be looking into this further.

Site flipping sounds like an interesting idea. I have never actually heard of it until I had a look at this but it is something that I will certainly consider and look into, so thanks for the post. I am a new mumpreneur and this certainly sounds like something that is worth considering.

    Hi,

I just had a look at the site you mentioned in your article. The sites look very affordable! I think research is a must before deciding on which site to buy.

  8. Hi Melinda – yes many of them are more affordable than people might think. However, be careful! Make sure you buy a site that has the ability to be monetised using one of the above characteristics (traffic, list, existing profit, expanding niche). Do not ever buy a site purely on ‘potential’, otherwise you are simply buying a website design, not a business!

  13. Mandy

I have recently started working from home and I was thinking about property development, as a way of making money however after reading this I think I may consider site flipping. One of the main reasons why I like the sound of this is because I can do it without leaving house.

  15. June

I am due with my second child and feel it’s time to give up full time work. Becoming a mumpreneur sounds like a great way to keep my skills but still spend time with my kids. Site flipping – that’s a new one to me!

  16. Dora

This sounds like a great idea although I do not know if I am technical minded enough. Would it be possible to outsource the technical side of the work? has anyone done this before?

  17. Dawn

I would like to try this idea out however I do not know where to start or what to do first. How would I start learning about this.?

  18. Anne

  19. Eve

I have never heard of this before but it certainly sounds like a great opportunity.

  20. I have not heard the term before. I know my website has huge potential but am nervous about making it too busy with monetizing and adds etc. What is your take on how much is too much?

  21. I have a friend with a logistics website that is profitable but she has started work somewhere else – she is in the conundrem that she invested money in a good website – so does not want to just close down but where do you put it out there for someone to site flip? Her lifestyle logistics site has the potential to grow but her passion has moved elsewhere – so the other side of a mum wanting to sell and would be perfect for another mum – where do the two meet?

  22. Sue

I have recently started doing site flipping and I am actually finding it a lot easier than I though it would be.

  23. Angie

I came across this post a few days ago and I have started doing site flipping. I have already built up a portfolio of 3 comments.

  24. I have been thinking about adding web design to my list of service, however I think I will give site flipping a go and see how it goes.
