Create Great Blog Design Using These Top 3 Useful Tips!

Posted on by in Blogging, Copywriting, How To

People who use the internet use it less and less for reading and more and more for the visual impact it can provide. Nowadays, it is not just about information, it is all about image.

How can you create great blog design with this tip in mind?

  1. Consider the goal of your blog: first of all, think about what your blog is about.
  2. Then, think about why people visit your blog – what kind of information you share? What are your visitors interested in finding on your blog?

Bloggers currently have three options of personalizing their blogs’ content: it is either a textual blog, a video-oriented one, or an audio blog. However, most often bloggers have blogs because it offers them the chance to ‘spread the news’, to express their personal feelings or to use them as assets for their businesses.

This is why the majority of blogs are focused on text and why in this post I am going to discuss about ways to create great blog design for textual sites.

However, if your blog is focused on sharing videos or audio files, you can also read on because I will enumerate some valuable info for this type of blogs too (such as the importance of headings’ fonts & font size, the ease of access and the WordPress design).

Top 3 tips to create a great blog design for your site

1. Consider your TEXT but don’t forget IMAGES

a)      TEXT

You have a textual blog. See now why you need a bit of brainstorming in what regards the ease with which people read your website? When dealing with the text on your blog, take into consideration the following:

  •  Typography/Fonts

-          Use user-friendly fonts – they invite visitors to read your texts;

-          If you are having troubles dealing with this, use Thesis – all the typography settings are handled out-of-the-box.

  •     Font Size

-          Use different font sizes for Headings, Sub-Headings, Regular Text and Links (also take into consideration captions, call-outs, block quotes, and other forms of text-differentiation);

-          This is important because it avoids getting people confused. Having your posts structured this way, you will be more organized and visitors will surely appreciate this.

  •  Space Between Paragraphs

-          As I have said in the beginning, nowadays it is all about visuals. If you bomb your readers with very long paragraphs, they will not read your posts. Keep them short (two or three phrases max!);

-          Always make sure to leave a space between paragraphs – this makes them easier to digest.

  •     Bolded Words

-          Are there any words you think are important? They can highly contribute to the ease of reading and they also make the blog more attractive.

-          In order to make words pop out, use only bold or italics! Avoid using underline, because it gives the impression of a link.

  •   Links and Link Building

-          Talking about links, give your links another colour and perhaps another font (but this is not necessary, however). Links are usually blue and people already know this – therefore, I suggest going with blue…

Some people are of the opinion that if visitors don’t read your texts they will not know what your articles are all about.

This is what skimming is for. And skimming is a very valuable tool for any blogger. An experienced blogger knows that a good article tells readers in just a few seconds what its content is all about.

So from skimming through your articles, visitors must be able to pick up ideas in no more than 10 seconds. This is why bolding, link building and font sizes are so important. Skimming also has the potential of helping visitors decide to read the entire article.

b)      IMAGES

Again, visuals. Images are all about visuals, and they contribute to the overall aspect of your site in ways that you never imagined. For example, they invite visitors to read your texts.

Always use an image which is relevant to your article’s topic so as to give a hint to visitors on what the article is about.

2. Keep in mind EASE OF ACCESS

It is very important for users to find information easy and fast. If not, they will give up reading and navigating on your site in a matter of seconds!

How can you ease the access to various articles on your site? By creating resource pages and including them in your navigation or in your sidebar.

The trick is to make them easy to find so that visitors will be invited to read more, to come back, and to spend more time on your site. Don’t forget that you should NEVER make your visitors think, you should ALWAYS put information at just a click away.

3. End with WordPress DESIGN

  • Design a personalized theme, buy one, pay a designer to create it.
  • Then, spend time creating a nice logo for your website – it has to be relevant, catchy, easy to remember.
  • Next, you have to pick a nice font for your sidebar headings.
  • Last, play with colours: a different colour for your links, another one for your headings/sub-headings, and another one for anything else.

How did you manage to create a great blog design for your website? Share the knowledge or ask questions! I’m eager to hear from you!
